Paranormal experiences of Santa

While ghosts, UFO's and Bigfoot are much known topics about the paranormal, there are less known and weirder stories involving the supernatural, like sightings of Santa Claus. Many people would not even admit it because Santa doesn't exist, or so they tell us. But why should people see Santa Claus then? I will mention a few of these cases and then offer sources.

Back in 2000 a small boy living in Bristol, England, was woken up by the sound of heavy footsteps on the floor downstairs and the sound of bells above him. He believed it was Santa Claus, and so he sneaked downstairs to have a peek. He remembered seeing a very large man putting presents around the tree, and the boy soon quietly went back upstairs to bed. The next day he told everyone what he saw. No one in his family believed him when he told him them what he'd seen.

In 2003, a girl was in bed on Christmas Eve night, when she was sure that Santa was outside of the house. There was a vivid red light shining through her bedroom window that came from a silent object in the sky, which convinced her that it was Father Christmas. There was no sound at all apart from a tinkling of bells and the scurrying of hooves on the rooftop. Soon the sounds and the red light vanished.

There are more Santa experiences posted HERE on Liveabout article by paranormal researcher Stephen Wagner who has collected stories about people's strange sightings. Some are very interesting while others can be easily explained.

My own experience happened when I was 9 years old, during Christmas Eve, I heard the clear sound of sleigh bells coming from the sky. I don't know what it was.

Now after doing a lot of research, many people claimed to have experienced a Santa like being when they were children. Perhaps it was an over active childhood imagination? Or misinterpreted something else? Another paranormal even such as UFO or a haunting that a young kid believed was Santa because it happened over Christmas? One thing is for sure that there's more to the universe than we know.

The dark side of Christmas

Christmas is actually an extension of Halloween, because it's meant to be a time of spookiness. How did I come to this? Well it's got so much happiness now that it shields everyone from nightmares but Christmas and Yule (whatever holiday you call it) is within the darkest time of the year. It's got many creepy things attached:

1. Ghosts

2. Monsters

3. Death

While modern Christmas is celebrated with family, friends, feasts, presents, decorations and cheer, it used to be a worrying month. Traditionally, for centuries, people listened to ghost stories around a warm fire that barely kept out the chill. This is deep rooted in ancient rituals of the Winter Solstice, and when people feared the spectral Wild Hunt. This is a phantom noisy gathering of hunters across the sky, making terrible sounds, that was believed to land and slaughter anything in its way. There is with that a fear of winter and darkness when the sun is less visible. People have perished during freezing winters.

Monsters are also part of many cultural traditions. We have Krampus in places like Germany that children have feared so much for many generations; there is the dreaded monster Yule Cat in Iceland; scary Jack Frost in England; the nightmarish Wendigo in the USA, and the list of Yule/Christmas monsters is endless. As Christmas time means holidays and joy, there is always that inner fear that some monster is lurking so there are ways of protection. Also there's many old superstitions about doom and gloom over Christmas that are still believed today. The most famous and benign superstition is kissing under the mistletoe but also there's many scary superstition about Christmas such as the one about Christmas trees as symbols and omens of death.

To learn much more about the things I briefly covered, check out these pages I've linked. Here are some spooky pages: Mental Floss page "8 Legendary Christmas Monsters" HERE.

Nuckelavee

This entity of the Orkney Islands is called a Nuckelavee and appears only during the winter. Most of the time it's trapped in the sea and imprisoned by a powerful spirit called Mither of the Sea. During the season of spring, Mither of the Sea fights with her arch enemy, the storm being Teran. He is then sent to the deepest ocean, and remains there for much of the year while tired Mither of the Sea rests. By autumn, Teran leaves the sea, as Mither is exhausted still. It is in winter that the nuckelavee emerges from the waves.

So what is it? The nuckelavee resembles a diabolical creature with part horse, part man, part fish, with grotesque limbs. It's also said to be fleshless and bloodied, with features that are similar to a monster from nightmares. It's breathe is toxic and can destroy plants. It also kills livestock animals and brings drought.

People were so terrified of the nuckelavee that they wouldn't even say the name for fear he could hear them. If they had to mention the nuckelavee they would make a prayer quickly afterwards. Apparantly the nuckelavee chases and stalks people, especially those who call upon him, so the best option is to cross over a body of fresh water. The nuckelavee prefers sea water and even bad water, so it's unable to go near fresh water. This entity brings sickness and plagues.

Cryptid news December

The village of San Antonio de Pintuyacu in Peru is where residents have seen strange creatures. They reported how entities that are 7 foot tall with "yellow eyes" have frightened people. Some witnesses have described these beings as dressed in black armour and wearing helmets, similar to knights. Others have told how these mysterious beings have flown on metallic disks. One person shot at one of these things and noticed to his horror that the entity simply got up and ran away. A teenaged girl was assaulted by two of these bizarre figures on floating disks, who tried to cut her with a sharp object. After she screamed, people rushed to help her and the two alien attackers fled. However, two Americans (Timothy Alberino and Doug Thornton) were in the area and tried to investigate this, but never found the culprits. Both are certain this is the work of humans and not aliens. Alberino commented "Worst case scenario this is an international organisation of organ harvesters or sex traffickers who are in possession of top-secret hardware and they are using it to do something very sinister."

In Arizona at the Petrified Forest National Park is video footage of a "unicorn". A night time clip showing a remarkable animal walking out into the moonlight taken by a game camera. It was during the full moon so this is what makes it seem very magical. However, the park's officials say that it's really a normal elk, with a single horn stage development, which is going to change. Youthful male elks tend to have straight single horns after shedding, called "spikes" and before growing another set, and eventually branches!

There is a video clip of something happening in the water at Loch Ness. This short video was taken by Eoin O'Faodhagain, using a webcam placed still at Shoreland Lodges. He has been searching for the Loch Ness monster for years. To view this watery disturbance, click HERE for the Youtube link.

The werewolf of Norfolk

Way back in 2006 a motorist was travelling along the road at the A1067 when he saw something very curious. He arrived at the lane between Fakenham and Norwich and he had been out into town for some entertainment and enjoyed watching a film in the cinema. As he was driving, he noticed the road was quiet and so something startled him. At the side of the road, was a large animal eating a carcass, that he wanted to look at and slowed down. He described the animal as being a large black wolf with shining yellow eyes. It's fur appeared matted and there was something eerily human about it. The wolf looked at him for a moment, giving him cold eye contact, then it resumed eating. He was so terrified of the encounter, and he went home shaking in fear. This is one of many multiple sightings of strange wolves and werewolves seen around Britain.

Pricolici

The "Pricolici" is a creature from Romanian legend, that is a type of wolf who can shapeshift. It's abilities include turning into humans and other animals. These things are believe to be undead, or entities that are angry human ghosts in wolf forms. They were once people in life, who did evil and after they died, they rose up from the grave because of unknown dark magic. Then their urges to kill people make them terrifying. They would be ghosts of angry evil people in the shape of wolves, and not appearing as rotten wolf zombies.

Also it's thought that the people who return as Pricolici were once werewolves in life, but also returning from the grave to continue their horrors with much more fear as they've got paranormal abilities. It's also interesting that the Pricolici are vampiric in nature. It's often them who turn into dogs, bats, humans and owls.

It must be pointed out that those living in rural pars of Romania have escaped being attacked by large wolves (lone wolves attacking people is more commonly thought to be Pricolici instead of a wild pack of wolves). The single wolves attacking people are believed they are werewolves or Pricolici because it always happens at night, and these loner wolves are very big, larger than average pack of regular wolves. The lone wolves who attack people are also quiet, as they choose a target and stalk them. It's been noted that survivors of these attacks by large loner wolves have described them as more scary than a pack of wolves and there was something supernatural about them.

Tatzelwurm

The Tatzelwurm is a legendary creature from the Alpine regions of central Europe. It's described as being a type of dragon, looking like a serpent, a feline chimera or an Asian dragon. The beast known as a Tatzelwurm has got four stunted limbs, a long snake-like body covered in scales and a catlike face. It hisses or makes highly pitched noises, whistles and shrieks. The monster's venomous breathe can kill. The name itself "Tatzelwurm" is Swiss to mean tunnel dragon. In Austria it's known as Bergstutz "Mountain stump" and in the French alps it's called "arassas", the "cat headed" lizard.

Monsters fitting the description were reported in various regions about the alps, many during the 17th century. More sightings happened in the 18th century and a farmer suffered a heart attack after witnessing two of these beasts. During the 19th century, a school teacher reported seeing one but there were some who also said they found one dead, but there was a bounty of finding them. Some said the Tatzelwurm drank milk from the udders of cows, so they placed a white rooster near the cows that warded off the dragon.

It didn't disappear, as some claimed a Tatzelwurm skeleton was found and sent to the Geneva Institute of Science in the 1900's. During the mid 20th century, a Swiss photographer claimed he'd taken a picture of the Tatzelwurm although many think it's a hoax. A girl working on a farm in Switzerland found a home in the ground of a Tatzelwurm, that appeared greyish and snakelike with two front legs and it was the size of a domestic cat.

Cryptid news November

Google Earth has picked up a large unidentified sea creature near a boat near Antarctica. Watch it on the Unexplained Mysteries page HERE.

Here is a clip of a Bigfoot sighting made a month ago in Colorado. It was filmed from a train. Youtube Clip of Bigfoot taken from a train in Colorado.

Although called a "mermaid" this creature is anything but beautiful. It's a mummified grotesque and recent X-rays and CT scans revealed it's got the upper body of a monkey, the hands of a reptile, and lower body of a fish. First found in the 19th century near Fiji by a sailor, who took it to the United States, it was displayed in sideshows and ended up in the Barnum's American Museum. Later it was soon passed around to the Clark County Historical Society, Ohio in 1906. For more on that go to the Wikipedia article HERE.

Ghost girl Abigail

Although the short stories of ghost kids have discontinued for now, many deserve their own epic posts alone. Here is a remarkable true ghost story set in one of America's old haunted houses. A gothic house in Plymouth, Massachusetts, is home to a number of resident ghosts including former owner, James Spooner, who died in 1954, as well as a girl named Abigail. It's believed Abigail wears a long white dress and is a friendly ghost, who often appears looking through a window, rustles bushes in an alleyway and standing in various rooms to surprise people.

She says very little. Once she opened the front door and invited in a group of construction workers into the property. While they set about to work, the curator arrived and asked them how they got into the locked house. When they told him that a little girl let them in, he asked what little girl was this because there wasn't anyone else in the house. The workmen felt spooked enough to leave, taking their tools with them.

It's said also that Abigail lived in the house long ago in the late 18th century, or possibly early 19th century. She was the daughter of a fisherman who was lost at sea. Soon aged only 8 years old, she died of an infection from a severe toothache, but some accounts say that she might've been murdered by her own mother, who had always been abusive to the poor child. Ever since then her spirit has been seen inside the house. A next door neighbour woke up to find the ghost of Abigail in her room. Also the spirit of the former resident James Spooner has been actively playing his favourite music. Now the Spooner House is a museum.

Two stories of ghost children (part 3)

1. The yellow ghost boy of Knebworth House, which is a castle in Hertfordshire, England. While the grand house is haunted, one of the most legendary spirits is the one of a shining boy with golden hair, who only appears to forewarn people of certain events. He's said to show up and reveal ways that the eye witness may become lucky or for some he'll appear as an omen of death. People have been disturbed by him and unable to have a good night sleep. Although the house was built during Medieval times, there's evidence of a Bronze Age dwelling nearby.

2. Ghost girl made of flames. In the University of Montevallo, Alabama, it's believed to be haunted by a spirit of fire. It's said that this apparition looks like a young woman of flames, that runs down the corridors screaming, haunting the area of the dorms. Believed to be the ghost of a student named Condie Cunniham, who died tragically in a fire in 1908 while in her room at the university. After her death, Condie's spirit has been unable to rest and her face also keeps appearing on the room's door, no matter how often the door was replaced. Anyone who uses that room can sense her fiery and eerie presence.

That is all 3 part Ghost Children stories done. More spooky and weird posts to follow.

Two stories of ghost children (part 2)

1. Black eyed kid of Cannock Chase. Reports of a strange girl haunting the area of Cannock Chase was believed to be a victim of an evil monster serial killer named Raymond Morris, who murdered children during the 1960's. Many innocent victims were found buried in Cannock Chase, and their spirits still appear there to this day. It's unclear if there is a connection or that the mysterious ghost girl is one of the victims or something else entirely. It's been said that this ghost girl has empty black eyes, and could've been a poor murder victim who was blindfolded when she died. The ghost walks through the woods in Cannock Chase. For more on Cannock Chase visit Haunted Rooms page HERE...

2. Ghost boy of Clinton Road, is almost legendary in West Milford, New Jersey. It's believed that the spirit of a deceased boy lingers near there, and usually "lives" under the bridge. People have claimed that if you toss a coin over the bridge, the ghost boy will return it back to you! Many driving around there feel unsettled being there, especially at night. The ghost boy is mostly active at midnight! It's not known who he is or why he's there. The stream under the bridge is shining with coins from people dropping them in the hope to meet the ghost boy. For more about this and other mysteries to do with Clinton Road, check out this page at Weird N.J. site HERE.. More to come in part 3.

Two stories of ghost children (part 1)

1. Phantom railway children of San Antonio in Texas. It's been regarded as a haunted place by a crossing at a train track, not far from the San Juanita Mission. To get there, locate intersection of Villamain and Shane where the tracks pass through Shane Road. This area has been reported by witnesses as being haunted, by ghostly children who push cars to safety and leave handprints in powder. It's believed that the children are spirits of deceased school pupils that lost their lives tragically there in a terrible accident during the 1930's. Source found at Ghost City Tours page: HERE..

2. Girl ghost in a window appears of an old house in York, England. It's believed that she's the spirit of a child who was locked in her house with the corpses of her family, who all died of the Bubonic plague, and she was unable to get out. She kept going to the window and screamed for help but no one could hear or see, as the plague took so many lives. This poor girl survived the plague although she was trapped inside a locked house and eventually starved to death. Source for the plague ghost girl is at Ghost Keeper site: HERE...

Cryptid news October

There's been a few updates about monsters and unknown creatures since I last posted about this. I will present them in paragraphs. This is going to make it tidy.

New photographs of strange activity coming from Loch Ness, posted online after the witness (a woman named Chie Kelly) reported seeing a creature in the water and took pictures. She felt reluctant to send them for a long time as she feared ridicule. There's been much excitement about this and I want to share it anyway:

Daily Record article HERE on woman photographing strange activity in Loch Ness.

Also there is another witness, a woman named Siobhan Janaway, who noticed a curious object moving at speed in the water. It happened at Foyer's Point near where Siobhan is a local resident in a town. She took a photograph and this can be viewed HERE at Mail Online.

It's emerged that a family were out enjoying a picnic at Dartmoor, at exactly Fernworthy Reservoir when they noticed a very large cat. They walked in the nearby woods and found a deer carcass that looked as if it had been eaten. Then this followed by a great roar sound, which scared the family and their pet dog. It's believed this area is haunted by a mysterious Big Cat.

Meg Shelton

One of the most strangest accounts of the 17th century England is about a woman named Meg Shelton. In her life she was a witch but in death she's a zombie. Her grave is marked with a heavy block of granite as this was believed to prevent her from getting out undead, as this is what she used to do! But despite this she found a way to crawl up through the soil around the block to rise from the grave. Many people have seen her zombie walking around even to this day!

Her name is Margery (or "Meg" for short) Shelton. It's not clear when she was born and if she ever married and had children. She lived in a small village named Catforth in Woodplumpton, a district of Preston city, Lancashire. It's known that she died in 1705, and buried in the graveyard of St. Anne's Church in Woodplumpton. Stories and reports made during her lifetime only indicate her activities but none said anything about her family. Also she was nicknamed "The Woodplumpton Witch" and "The Fylde Hag".

She was troublesome and very unpopular within the community.  One of the things she got up to was theft. She liked stealing milk from cows until one day a farmer caught her at it red handed. Also she used magic to shapeshift into animals and inanimate objects so that she could steal things. She disguised her ceramic jug as a live goose to help her steal milk. Another time she turned herself into a rabbit and got bitten by a dog, then afterwards she always walked with a limp. Meg entered a barn and turned herself into a sack of corn, so that she could help herself to free food. The suspicious farmer poked her with a fork until she let out a scream.

The witch of Woodplumpton was gruesome and liked boiling animals to eat with parsley and thyme. It's said that she was "trapped" by a girl who stuck bodkins attached with looms on her as she was sitting quietly in a chair at home. This here indicates that the woman was often bullied and assaulted by members of the village, and that she might also have been up to mischief with them. She was sent to trail for witchcraft, but was given brutal torture, She was then killed by being crushed to death between a wall and a big wooden barrel. She can't rest!

Iele the Transylvanian nymphs

The nymphs of Greek and Roman mythology, including dryad and, naiads, and many more. are described as supernatural female nature spirits. There can be found similar versions of nymphs in different other parts of Europe, including in the infamous place associated with horror stories, Transylvania. The nymphs of Transylvania (and in Romania as a whole) are called Iele. The Iele are considered very beautiful female nature spirits, who resemble young beautiful women with shimmering hair, who dwell in forests, caves, mountains and up in the sky.

They bath in fresh water,  springs and lakes, streams, rivers and marshes. Often seen at crossroads, this makes these roads quite interesting. The Iele tend to be nocturnal when they're most active at night, dancing in the moonlight and starlight. They wear anklets with small bells so it makes gentle sounds when they move. They carry illuminated candles and appear to be sparkling.

Maple and walnut trees are special to the Iele, for they climb them and reach the tops, where they like to dance magically but never fall. They're also described as wearing anything from fine loose dresses to golden chainmail, or dressed scantily clad in only flowers, or wearing nothing at all. They're not malicious by any way, although their presence harms the soil. Whenever they've been seen dancing, the place turns to carbon. and the grass is dead and tainted. The leaves around the trees where they danced is burnt. When the grass later eventually grows back, it's not green anymore but red or black, where mushrooms sprout up although the animals won't touch that grass.

They often gather in groups and are rarely alone. They can travel at fast speed, and sometimes they use fiery chariots that whirl in the air. Although not evil, they can have bad tempers, and they can cause sensations of delirium, faintness, fatigue and motion sickness. The Iele can be vengeful and they can drive people to insanity. People have worn talismans of protection against the Iele, including mugwort and the dance of the Calusari. Today in Romania it's thought that the Iele are responsible for many experiences with aliens and hauntings.

Another September disaster

Print by Jeramias Gath 1618

September is now remembered for the awful tragedy of World Trade Centre disaster on September 11th 2001. But most people don't know about an even more less known manmade disaster because it happened centuries ago at Plurs. It was believed that a very affluent village/town called Plurs had been beautiful and picturesque, with its inhabitants healthy and prosperous.

Situated in an area that is part of Italy today, but back then it was Swiss, and nestled among greenery and hills, there was a Mount Conto nearby that the ancient people believed was the dwelling place of a powerful spirit. This mountain was considered sacred in pre-Christian times, and visited regularly by people at certain times of the year.to give offerings. They regarded the mountain as home of a god, whose identity might've been Odin, who was considered the chief god of the Lombards people. But it was also possible the god was Mercury, who was worshipped by the Romans. Apart from this, ever since the Dark Ages, the citizens of the large village Plurs remained faithful to the mountain and the deity who lived there, but since turning to the Church, people in Plurs forgot many of their old customs and traditions passed down since ancient times, and saw the mountain dweller as a demon or a spirit that should be left alone.

It was during the Early Middle Ages that Plurs became a town, when people recognised that Mount Conto was filled with precious and valuable stones called "Lavazzi" (talcum). They mined for it, and this made them very rich. Mining wasn't quite understood very well, since they didn't fill in the tunnels or support the walls inside after making large caves. This would cost them badly. For it was one single night on 4th September 1618 that the mountain smoked and ejected lightning, collapsed, and buried the whole town of Plurs, killing between 1,000 and 2,500 people. Some believe that it was carelessness and others say it was the anger of the god in the mountain.

I will briefly mention also another well known event like that was the Landslide of Goldau that happened on 2nd September 1806, but that was a natural disaster. In the area itself there had been a Medieval village of Rothen that disappeared under a landslide. The people of Goldau prospered and its nearby mountain Rossberg was the cause of the destruction. Share a thought to those long forgotten.

Fittleworth mystery

Fittleworth is a picturesque village in Sussex, England, but has more than it's fair share of grim mysteries and paranormal events. Ancient and Medieval buildings including the taverns, Coates Castle and stone bridges over the river, with centuries of history, The place is even mentioned in Beowulf, the epic Anglo Saxon poem. A Roman relic was discovered there and is known as the Fittleworth Iphigenia.

What strangeness has been happening in modern times is the weird discovery of dead animals found in trees. These corpses were found hung from trees in the woods near residential streets. They include a dead rabbit left on a branch, a dead crow inside a crook of a tree, then further away was a dead woodpecker, and a leg of a deer. It's not known why this happened or why, but residents were very concerned about it. This report was made several years ago and I've not been able to find any updates about this. Were these dead animals offerings? is there a cult? was it caused by predators? or something else? Is there still large snakes and were they responsible? If anyone knows more, please let me know in the comments.

The area is part of a wider region full of folklore in dragons and giant serpents. To find out more about this visit Sussex Dragons and Serpents page HERE

Seven haunted waters

Sometimes during Summer the urge to go and cool off in water makes people explore the natural lakes and rivers. They often do this without knowing the folklore and myths about these bodies of water. Here are some spooky waters to list.

Coombe Pool in Coventry, England, is the site of a few hauntings. A pool favoured by fishermen, anglers and swimmers, it's been widely reported that ghosts linger there by the water. These ghosts include a Medieval monk, a Victorian woman and a headless horseman.

Caerphilly Castle in South Wales, is a dreamy looking place situated by a crystal clear lake. It's ghost is a beautiful apparition named "The Green Lady" who is often seen around the castle and the grounds, passing the water's edge. It's believed she's the ghost of a princess, who is thought to be Alice of Angouleme, who died from a broken heart when her lover was killed.

People who enjoy holidaying at the River Bure in Horning, Norfolk, are scared when the chilling screeches of a ghost echo throughout the area, coming from the nearby ruins of St Benet's Abbey. It's believed that it's haunted by an angry monk named Essric who was brutally killed by Norman soldiers.

Crookes Valley Park has a haunted lake, although a favourite place for tourists during Summer months. Not only is it spooky at night with the ghost of a girl, but the depths of the water is full of monstrous fish that divers avoid entering it. Some believe these unnatural fish are from scientific experiments by the University.

Bride's Pool, Hong Kong, is a picturesque looking pool of water with a graceful waterfall. Despite its natural beauty, it's haunted by a young woman who tragically died on her way to get married. People have reported seeing a ghostly form of a lady in red, and Asian brides wear red cheongsam gowns.

Devil's Pool, Australia is a haunted pool surrounded by rocks and a sparkling waterfall. The ghost of a young woman has been seen around there and even dipping into the pool. It's believed that she's the spirit of an Aborigine woman named Oolana who flung to her death after losing her beloved.

Manchac Wetlands, Louisiana, is a cursed place haunted by a voodoo priestess, as it was where she lived. Some claim that she is spirit of Julie White, who often sat on her porch and sang "One day I'm gonna die, and I'm gonna take all of you with me." Shortly after her death in 1915, a vicious hurricane appeared and destroyed three nearby villages, and claimed the lives of hundreds of people in the area.

Seven haunted Forests of the world

The Black Forest in Germany: An ideal setting for many fairy tales, with some scary horrors. Folklore tales of headless horsemen, werewolves, giants, mysterious dwarves and forest kings. There is a legend of a certain forest king who steals women and takes him to his secret abode. It has interesting wildlife including giant earthworms, cattle, enigmatic horses and rare (endangered) Western capercaillie birds. This is the location where the Brothers Grimm set their beloved stories of Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Goose Girl.

Wychwood Forest in England: The most haunted forest in England is full of dark tales of paranormal entities. There are stories of phantom coaches pulled by ghostly horses, witches, grey ladies, a haunted bridge, hobgoblins, legendary highwaymen and woodland spirits. It's a favourite place in folk tradition to gather mistletoe, considered sacred by the ancients. Another favourite custom is Feast of Beltane, beer and beverage making.

Hoia-Baciu Woods in Transylvania: Found in Romania, this broad forest overlaps Transylvania and is rich with horror stories. A dark eerie place that inspired Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, this forest is also full of legends. It's regarded as one of the most haunted places on Earth. Not only is it well known for ghosts and monsters, countless many have disappeared and never seen again. It's nicknamed a "Transylvanian Bermuda Triangle!". It's believed that people have entered it and gone through a portal in time. Some have gone into the forest and come out again covered in mysterious burns and illnesses. An area of the forest is a complete circle shape and its barren although it's dense with paranormal activity.

Aokigahara in Japan: Located in Fujinomiya-shi is a thick dark forest near the volcano Mount Fuji. It's got a sinister reputation as a haunted forest as it's full of ghosts and eerie entities, plus darker mysteries that offer no explanation. It's nicknamed "Suicide Forest" because many people have gone there to take their own lives, and never returned. This has been going on for almost a century. It's believed that a number of trapped souls in the forest are causing the atmosphere to be heavy in energy and ghostly phenomena. Travellers in the forest have found compasses not working properly, which might be because of volcanic activity.

Isla de las Munecas in Mexico: This place is an island in the canals of Xochimico which is wooded and also a place full of spooky dolls! There is legend that a girl mysteriously lost her life there, and many paid respects by giving her spirit dolls. Now it's an island completely full of dolls, that look creepy and also off putting so anyone wanting to go and visit will change their minds. It's said that the spirit of the dead girl enters the dolls, or that other children's spirits possesses them. People have claimed the dolls move on their own and even their eyes open. It's been found that people have heard the dolls whispering and trying to lure them to the island. The caretaker of the island took his own life in 2001 as it was believed he suffered from depression, and now his spirit cares for the island still, looking after the spirits of the children.

Elfin Forest in California: A place with many supernatural creatures and ghosts. It's got a reputation locally as being a place where a woman mysteriously died there, and her spirit has been wandering around searching for her family, who also vanished in the forest years before. Archaeologists found tools, burial mounds, relics and petroglyphs belonging to a tribe of Northern Diegueno in the forest. So it's believed the spirits of these earlier people haunt the location. Including this are tales of the elves, ladies in white, bleeding trees, witches, shadows and gypsy curses. A haunted house named Questhaven was the site of an asylum, where a giant white owl and armies of ghosts haunt. Outside is said to be violent man-eating paranormal creatures roaming around outside.

Dow Hill Forest in India: This is found in the West Bengal town of Kurseong and has a reputation for being haunted. There's a boy's school located there, full of spooky hauntings such as eerie noises and footsteps heard within the corridors and rooms even late at night and during holidays when the school has closed. But the surrounding, nearby forest is even more haunted. There's a path named "Death Road" where a phantom of a headless boy haunts through the trees and near the school. There's also reports of a ghostly grey lady and people being watched by gleaming red eyes in the dark forest. Its a gruesome location of grisly murders and hundreds of strange unknown deaths.

Butterfly people

There was a very strange event that happened in a place called Joplin on 22nd May, 2011. It was almost like something out of a fantasy novel. One could think of many similar stories from "Wizard of Oz" to "A Midsummer Night's Dream" but this incident was that and more.

Joplin is in Jasper County, Missouri, and a prosperous town with a mining industry, also famous for it's criminal residents Bonnie and Clyde. What else happened there was far more deadly, such as the tornadoes that struck in 1971 and 2011. Many businesses, homes , school and even a hospital were destroyed. As many as 161 people lost their lives in the 2011 tornado, which happened during that fateful evening. Described as an EF5 tornado, (the largest size that a tornado can be), it was a monstrous storm and it was a nightmare.

It was after this tornado that it emerged that kids were talking about things they saw during the tornado. They claimed that "butterfly people" protected them from the dangerous storm. One child recounts seeing a shining butterfly person who appeared as the storm was approaching and saved her life. Many people dismiss all of that as childhood imagination or a mistake. Some claim the kids saw angels while others believe it was the Mothman cryptid. An artist visited Joplin and there heard tales of the Butterfly people. It was his project to help kids make mural pictures of the Butterfly people.

Wildlife picture of the month

This is the last "Wildlife picture of the month" post, and this one is about seals.

Mostly found all around the coasts of the British Isles, seals are a common cool sight and they are also drawn to the water.  There's different types of seals, and those found on the coasts of Britain will learn that there's the grey seal and the common seal.

Grey seals are also called Horsehead Seals and the average male grey seal is 10ft, and females are 6ft. They can also be found across mainland Europe, especially in Scandinavia. Also found in other parts of the world in the Americas. Mostly they're interested in fish as these very cute animals are carnivorous. Grey seals do well in colder areas.

Common seals are also called Harbour Seals. They grow up to 6ft.They can be many different colours from blonde to black, also manly mottled grey or marl. They can thrive in the sea and cold winters, but they like travelling up and down rivers and streams. Their favourite foods are fish, crabs and squids.

Strange dog of Meriden

There's a legend of a mysterious black dog in the Hanging Hills of  Meriden, Connecticut, which is silent and leaves no trace. This dog is described as having black fur, and also various stories of its size and breed. Often claimed to utter no sound even if it looks as if its barking and howling. The dog leaves no pawprints even in snow, mud and rain. There's a customary superstition about this dog, that if you see it once, it means joy, but see it again for a second time will mean sadness, but if seen for a third time, it means death.

Seen around the countryside and hills, this dog has a phantom like presence. There's a local legend of a man named Pynchon who was a geologist, who visited the area of Meriden. He took a professional interest in the mountain of West peak, so he trekked to it. He noticed that he was being followed by a black dog. He made sure to keep away from it, but saw that the dog was always appearing in view and then it vanished into trees. Another time he visited the place and saw the black dog for a second time, while he was among companions. One of his friends had told him he'd seen this dog and later that same person suffered a tragic accident. Years later, Pynchon returned to climb the mountain. He was later found deceased at the bottom of a hill. People guess that he must've encountered the black dog a third time and then died.

West Peak is often favoured by hikers and mountaineers but many people have had fatal accidents or simply disappeared. Its best that people should take heed of local legends and fears. Even to the sceptics who dismiss Black Dog folklore, the hills are dangerous anyway. Many people associate this with the Black Dog who lives there. There is someone who took a photograph of this mysterious black dog of Meriden but is it the same dog? The link to the photo is in my link below:

Lindworm

The Lindworm is a giant serpent dragon, wingless and without legs. It appears in both mythology and as a symbol in heraldry. According to Norse mythology, the most well known Lindworm is Jorumungandr the World Serpent. While associated with gigantic snakes, the Lindworm is a huge sea serpent or probably described as a sea dragon. The word itself "Lindworm" is from two Old High German words, "lint" and "orm", Old Danish word "lithi", Old English "lithe", all of which means flexible, slithery and pliant. Snakes are lithe, as well as graceful and supple.

It was once believed that the lindworm was lucky and created extra fortunes. The figure of a serpent eating its own tail is a lindworm, a self destructive type that can't be positive. While some stories about lindworms talk of a dangerous creature that eats people, other stories show a benign lindworm that could've been transformed.

In Sweden, the lindworm is also described as "mane snake" as it has hair on its head like a human or a horse. It's venomous and ejects blinding fluid. They live deep in the forests, under rocks and hidden from sight. If located, it can strike. Lindworm eggs are found under tila cordata small-leaf lime trees (linden trees). Other well known Lindworms includes Nidhogg and Ofnir, who both bite the roots of Yggdrasil, the World Tree. Also Fafnir, who was a dwarf and became a lindworm after being turned into one. Grabak or "the grey back" appears on a stanza. Graffvoludr the "grave digger".

La Mala hora

La Mala hora is a sinister entity that comes from folklore in southern states of America such as New Mexico, which is believed to scare kids. The name means "The Evil One" and can also be La Malora and La Malorga.

A frightening, nocturnal entity that wanders around countryside at night harassing people who are unfortunate to be there. La Mala hora has been described as a shadow figure in female form, sometimes a dark orb, a slender black shape or a woman in dark clothing. When she takes on human form, it's said to be a bad sign as she can turn violent. Her eyes are red and she has sharp teeth.

It's believed that anyone who sees her will be driven mad. She can hypnotise people and even paralyse them. She's said to cause pain and inflict breathing problems. While some believe that she's a type of demon, others say that she's a nature spirit and commands wind.

This demon woman has also been associated with crossroads. She's caused road accidents, and was linked to a scary urban legend of a motorist who almost died because of her. La Mala hora has been said to chase alongside speeding cars, and grow to a large size. Meeting her is a bad omen.

Wildlife picture of the month

Each month since September 2022 I've been doing "Wildlife picture of the month" posts, and I plan to do this for a whole year. This month I shall be discussing a very important large wild animal in the British countryside, and these are wild horses.

They can be found mainly nature reserves, grazing and in many herds. They wallow in the muddy waters and drink from the fresh streams. They like rough course grass including herbs. Their feeding habits nourishes the landscape and creates soil for much more wild flowers and creatures. They mostly live in woodlands, hills and fields. From New Forest ponies in south England to the Eriskay ponies of Scotland, wild horses can also be found in Camargue, Shetland, Exmoor, Iceland, Konok and the Dülmen Reserve.

While these horses or ponies are seen roaming across the countryside, they're not really feral either because there are official bodies of people who look after them. Around nature reserves such as the New Forest are the verderers, Agisters and New Forest Commoners. These people have been organised to care and study these horses and they were established many centuries ago. They ensure that the horses are safe and healthy, tending to any during accidents, illness or ailments. Without these ponies and their grazing, the woodlands would turn into swamps. It's very unwise for members of the public to feed the horses. If they do then they'll get a fine and a criminal record, plus a nasty kick.

So if you visit these places, be kind, respect nature and animals.

La Bolefuego

La Bolefuego or "The Firehead" is a folklore entity from Columbia and Venezuela. Also called La Candileja, this is a luminous female spirit that haunts the lush region of Los Llanos every night. Described as a glowing lantern that moves over the grass, trembling and dancing, without anyone being near it. Some have described this apparition as a burning corpse that responds angrily to those who look at her. It's believed that people must close their eyes when they see her, and to never pray either as this will only encourage her to turn violent. La Bolefuego prefers to scare lone travellers.

Legend has it that this entity goes back as far as the 18th century. It's believed this started as a tragic story. A young woman and her children were murdered in their home by a gang of criminals. After being viciously raped, the criminals robbed the house and set it on fire, leaving mother and children within. The woman's husband was away on business, so she was left all alone. The woman prayed but the smoke was too much and it killed her and the poor children. After that, it's said her furious spirit of the woman still haunts the area, appearing a bright fiery ghost, terrifying people and even killing them.

Nature CCTV films witches?

A nature enthusiastic woman named Corinea Stanhope, in British Columbia found a mutilated dead deer by her property. She set up a hidden camera to find out what sort of predator was responsible for killing the deer. It wasn't something she was looking forward to finding out because the area has known dangerous creatures, bear, big cats and wolves. Corinea has children and some horses so it was important to know. But what she later discovered after viewing the film, was much more disturbing and mysterious.

The camera picked up two people feeding on the decaying corpse of the dead deer. Shocked by what was on there, the woman and her family saw a couple on the film, at night and both half dressed, feasting on the dead deer. They looked like a young man and woman, who had long dark hair. They appeared to be eating the foul remains of the deer corpse. The discovery was uploaded on the internet, and many users commented their views. Some told Corinea to phone the police.

It's been speculated the half naked people that were nibbling on dead deer were witches belonging to a cult. Others even said the pair were evil spirits, demons, skinwalkers and wendigo. Besides the strange couple, the hidden camera also picked up a number of other wild animals around the deer including a bob cat. Some say it was a prank, although that doesn't explain why there would be half naked and eating a rotten dead deer. There is a lot of holes to the story, such as media reporting that the video clip shows "two scantily clad women" when the images show just one woman and a man. Some wonder if the whole story was a fabrication or this was just being over the top weird couple having a grim wild romantic dinner!

Strzyga

Strzyga by Fiona Scott

The Strzyga is a creature from Slavic folklore. The term "strzyga" is a name for the female demon kind, and the male counterparts are called "strzygi". It's believed to be a vampire demoness, with horrible traits and a thirst for human blood.

In Polish folklore, it's said that a person born with two hearts, two souls and two sets of teeth is a strzyga/strzygi. Also newborn babies with fully developed teeth were also considered by be strzyga. In the Medieval period, many people were buried alive during times of plague, and those who managed to crawl out from beneath the graves were thought to be undead or strzyga, then sent away from their home villages. The twin souls of the dead strzyga. were parted, so one passes into the afterlife and the other remains earthbound, taking form of an owl who attacked people at night and drank their blood and then devouring the rest later.

Scholars believe that the strzyga originates from the mythical Strix creature from Greek and Roman myths and legends. The Strix is a kind of demonic entity in the form of an owl that feeds on human blood and flesh.

The strange Hexham Heads

Werewolf created by me using AI

The strange case of the Hexham Heads, involves a werewolf story. This is a true event that occurred in a place called Hexham in Northumberland, England, during 1971. It began when a couple of boys, the Robson brothers, were digging in dirt and they found a pair of curious stones that were carved into the shape of human heads. The description of the stone heads was small, about 2 inches wide, each with different characteristics. One head was called "the boy" for it's hair was made as drawn with lines. The other head called "the girl" seemed to have bigger eyes and longer hair. Some have described the "boy" looking more like a child and the "girl" seemed more of an adult or an elderly woman. It is the female stone head that caused bother, as a report was made that this "girl" stone was demonic.

Once the discovery of the heads was known more locally, the newspapers mentioned it and studies were made. Archaeologists examined the two heads and were not able to date them. It was believed the heads were Celtic in origin due to the style of the carvings. But it wasn't so much the significance of the stone heads that interested historians. Something else happened.

While the stone heads were in the family home of the Robson's, the stone heads moved by themselves. Objects were thrown around, by unseen forces, especially glass bottles. Things turned violent this way by a poltergeist. The paranormal activities turned so severe that the next door neighbours also experienced the same things. The neighbours were terrified when a boy's hair was pulled by an ghost, and another occasion when they saw a goat-man entity exiting their house. The Robson family handed the stone heads over to the historian Dr Anne Ross.

She had these stone heads with her, and also experienced troubling strange things. She was disturbed from sleep during the night and saw a wolf-man in her bedroom, leaving through the door, so she went after it. She followed the entity down into the kitchen, where it vanished. Another time, her daughter returned home from school to see a wolf-man on the stairs who bounded away before disappearing. More paranormal activities followed until she learned that the Robson's had a similar experience. When she took the stone heads from her house, the paranormal stopped.

Later a man named Desmond Craig emerged and claimed that he made those two heads for his daughter, when he used to live in the Robson family house years before. When told to replicate the stone heads, the ones he produced were not in anyway the same. They were much more of poor quality and his claims that he made the other two were dismissed. The University of Newcastle examined the two heads and found they were moulded artificially from solid rock, and not made with sand and clay as the Mr Craig had done. The heads were passed around among historians until they ended up at University of Southampton, who then handed them to a psychic in 1978, where they completely disappeared. The whereabouts of the Hexham stone heads is unknown.

The town of Hexham has experienced a werewolf in the past, long before the Hexham Heads incident. In 1904 there were attacks by a wolf creature in Hexham, which some believed was paranormal and not a regular wild wolf. This was reported in The Hexham Courant newspaper "The Wolf of Allendale" which saw a brutal loss of livestock animals with bite wounds on the necks, some were gutted and half eaten. A large wolf was seen near Allenheads School that drew panic, so a hunting party was organised to look for it. They only found traces of the wolf near a drain but it had gone. Sheep were slaughtered one night, and hunters were still unable to locate the wolf.

Hungry grass

Hungry grass or fairy grass is an Irish folklore. It's creepy and frightening legend about an area of grass, different to other patches of grass, rooted in cursed soil and was planted by malevolent spirits. Anyone walking over the cursed grass were doomed to suffer with both weakness and hunger. Some other believe this grass is caused by an unshriven corpse buried there. To avoid this, someone who must cross over the hungry grass can protect themselves by bringing along food to eat.

The Irish Potato Famine happened in the years between 1845 and 1852 gave more emphasis on the legend of the hungry grass, and manifested a cruel supernatural entity called the Hungry Man, who people feared the most. It was said that hungry grass and the Hungry Man ate people, including fishermen and farmers.

Hungry grass originally came from a site called Knockday, or "Hungry Hill". It's a magical and beautiful place with ancient megaliths and a beautiful big waterfall. People have mysteriously vanished on this hill, but there is a story of a man who went there, found the grass moving like snakes and wrapping around him, but the grass blades fell away from him when he took a bite of an apple. Later he went to a village and was told the hill was dangerous as it consumed people. Feeling annoyed that the man survived the hungry hill, bad fairies planted hungry grass everywhere. A wall was built around the Hungry Hill and famine stopped. It's believed that if the wall falls, famine will return.

The myth of hungry grass appeared in 1811 in Ozarks region of Missouri, USA, by Irish settlers in the area when an earthquake happened. It was believed that was caused by a "Gortach", a supernatural creature that liked to damage crops and kill people. A century later, farmers who smoked hemp were immune to the monster who wrecked havoc each night. Festivals were held that put off the monster, although the culture was ceased with a change in law in the 1930's. In recent times the festivals returned after more relaxed laws for hemp and cannabis.

Wildlife picture of the month

This is the 10th post in Wildlife Picture of the Month topic so far. I plan to do 12 and I have been writing about them at the start of each month. Among all of the wild animals in Britain and Europe I've been randomly choosing an animal and its traits on that month.

Among the amphibians is the common frog, mostly found in wetlands. They can appear in gardens with fresh ponds too. Common frogs are found throughout the British Isles and are patterned with spots and stripes. They have long legs ideal for hopping. There are many kinds of other amphibians including different varieties of frogs, toad, newts and salamanders that belong to the Lissamphibia group of animals, a smooth amphibian who are a class of modern tetrapods, or "four footed" creatures. There are many kinds of amphibians in the world.

Frogs appear in so many myths and folklore. In one particular story by Aesop, "The Frogs Who Desired a King" was about a load of frogs asking the god Zeus for a king of their own. Zeus gave them a king which was a log, and it splashed into the water. This annoyed the frogs and they crawled over the long and realised it wasn't moving or communicating to them. They asked Zeus for another king, a real one who was strong and alive. Zeus sent them a large stork, who began eating the frogs. The rest of the frogs asked Zeus for a better king, but the god refused, saying they already asked for a king twice. The story tells us that it's best to be grateful for what's been given instead of demanding more.

Jicotea sugar spirits

One of the most strangest cryptid sightings involve the sugar creatures or Sugar Bundle of Jicotea in Cuba. It happened in 1915 when two mounted guards were patrolling a field of sugar cane. The names of the two men are not known, but their story was told by Albert Rosales, an author and UFO researcher. In Las Villas, is a small place of Jicotea with farmland including sugar canes. As the two guards were riding on horseback along a path during the evening. Their horses became agitated when they turned a corner and noticed a small object on the ground further along the trail. It looked like a small white bag of sugar, and it moved on its own! The horses were refusing to go forwards and the little sack crawled towards them. The guards shot at  the small bag, hoping to disable it and instead the white bag turned larger. They shot at it again, and the bag grew even more bigger. As the men kept shooting at it, the bag was growing every time! Soon the object became as large as the horses. The men dismounted and chose to flee the area, but its not clear what made them get off their horses and left them, or why the horses didn't leave. The men told everyone their fantastic tale. The following day, they returned to the site to get their horses, who were discovered unharmed, and grazing in a field.

This sounds like a weird 1950's science fiction film similar to "The Blob" although this happened in 1915. So what did the men really witness? Cryptid it might be, but this sounds almost paranormal and with a hint of ghosts at work. It's not the first time that an entity was seen growing in size. In the book Phantom Black Dogs of Latin America by Simon Burchell, there is mention of a story about a man who found a strange black puppy in a field that suddenly grew to adult size within moments, frightening him. Many other spirits and creatures have magical abilities that cause shape-shifting and size changing. Sugarcane fields are places of hauntings in many parts of the world. In fact all fields, crops and plantations are haunted as these draw in many types of spirits.

Haunted village of Pluckley

This is said to be the most haunted creepiest villages in England. Pluckley is a visually beautiful village in Kent, a region in South England, which has been made famous for featuring in TV series "The Darling Buds of May". Despite its picture perfect appearance, it's far from peaceful and quiet.

The Church of St Nicholas has a tomb for the Dering family, believed to be responsible for a lot of spooky goings on, including eerie lights, manifestations and loud banging. During the 1970's a team of paranormal researchers spent the night locked inside the church with their cameras and recorders. They were only troubled by an aggressive dog outside of the church, who kept barking all of the time, giving them troubled sleep. When the vicar unlocked the door the next morning to let them out, they mentioned this dog and told him to keep it under control, but the vicar told them he doesn't have a dog and there isn't one let inside the grounds at night.

A monk haunts the large house of Greystones, believed to be the same monk who died of depression after losing his beloved, a young woman who was tragically killed. In the same neighbourhood, another haunted house is Rose Court. Another frightening phantom is the Watercress Lady, who haunts the bridge, often seen screaming in a ball of flames. It's well known that early in the century, an eccentric elderly gypsy woman used to collect watercress from the river. She was killed in an accidental fire, caused by sleeping with a lit clay pipe she often smoked. Sometimes she's seen as a pink glow.

There is a ghost of a highwayman who was killed by soldiers at an oak tree, which itself no longer stands. However, the scene replays with the ghost of swords entering his body as he falls to his death against a ghost tree. Many witnesses have been traumatised by this haunting as it was violent and bloody, showing even the man's screams. It recurs often at a place known as Fright Corner.

There are many more haunted sites in Pluckley from the Black Horse Inn of so much ghostly activities, to the spooky Screaming Woods, all of which are chilling. It's recent famous haunt was in 2019 when a woman took a photograph of two ghosts watching children playing. One of the ghosts looked like a shadow of a man behind the trees. The other ghost clearly was a girl wearing a long dress, and she was up in a tree.

Walpurga Hausmannin

Walpurga Hausmannin was a true vision of a frightening witch, who died in 1587. She was involved in horrible activities including vampirism, cannibalism, murder and infanticide. She confessed to making a pact with demons and using dark magic. Many can assume that she was one of many unfortunate victims of witch mania that was rife throughout Medieval Europe. However, there seems to be a lot more to her and she didn't seem at all worried about admitting anything.

It all began in Dillingen, Bavaria, where she worked as a respected midwife for two decades. Soon after the death of her husband, she grew lonely, and sought company of a man who lived in the neighbourhood. She expected him to visit her at home one evening, but another man arrived instead, who was named Federlin. They got intimate and then she realised that he was a demon, who soon left quickly after she cried out. Federlin returned another day and wooed her, promising her security and love if she gave herself to him. She became convinced that he was in love with her, and she started to do creepy things that he told her to do. Some of those things she was ordered to do by him was to kill animals and people.

Federlin often raped her whenever and wherever he could. She was totally and completely under his control. As she worked as a midwife, she used her position to kill helpless mothers and their innocent babies. She infected them with poisons and even used their corpses in diabolical feasts. She was sentenced to death by the Archbishop of Augsburg. People at the time were far more upset that she rejected the Church than with all of her killing spree on women and children. As a witch who openly confessed what she'd done, she was given brutal punishment. She was mutilated with red hot pincers, and then torn to pieces by an angry mob. Still alive, her disfigured hand was chopped off, then she was lashed on the wooden stake where she would shortly then be burned to death. Afterwards, her executioner gathered up her remains and threw it in the river.
