This entity of the Orkney Islands is called a Nuckelavee and appears only during the winter. Most of the time it's trapped in the sea and imprisoned by a powerful spirit called Mither of the Sea. During the season of spring, Mither of the Sea fights with her arch enemy, the storm being Teran. He is then sent to the deepest ocean, and remains there for much of the year while tired Mither of the Sea rests. By autumn, Teran leaves the sea, as Mither is exhausted still. It is in winter that the nuckelavee emerges from the waves.
So what is it? The nuckelavee resembles a diabolical creature with part horse, part man, part fish, with grotesque limbs. It's also said to be fleshless and bloodied, with features that are similar to a monster from nightmares. It's breathe is toxic and can destroy plants. It also kills livestock animals and brings drought.
People were so terrified of the nuckelavee that they wouldn't even say the name for fear he could hear them. If they had to mention the nuckelavee they would make a prayer quickly afterwards. Apparantly the nuckelavee chases and stalks people, especially those who call upon him, so the best option is to cross over a body of fresh water. The nuckelavee prefers sea water and even bad water, so it's unable to go near fresh water. This entity brings sickness and plagues.
