This is a really special post with video clips of supposedly real griffins. I mention griffins first because it was drawn to my recent attention that this legendary is real. You can watch the following clip and decide for yourself: You Tube "Is this a real griffin?" and also on You Tube I came across more clips of strange animals that resemble the mythical griffin: Breaking footage of real life griffin
A griffin is a creature with the body of a lion and head of an eagle. More specifically the head and feathered wings of an eagle, while the rest, including four legs and tail is like that of a lion. Also similar to lions, they have the same paws and strength. These creatures can fly and have the same excellent sharp vision of an eagle.
The origins of the griffin comes from Egypt and Persia due to the artwork featuring them. Ancient Persians called them lion-eagles or "Shirdal". They were seen in a positive light. Griffins were regarded as creatures of fortune, happiness, the sun and protectors. Griffins symbolised royalty and they guarded treasure. There are images of griffins used during warfare on the Minor Hierakonpolis Dogs Palette. Ancient Greeks linked griffins with the gods Zeus and Apollo.
Some modern scholars believe griffins were a misunderstanding and that the myths based on ancient people finding fossils of Protoceratops dinosaurs in the Gobi Desert full of skeletons. There is quite a resemblance between these dinosaurs and a griffin, minus the wings though.
