There are so many cases of werewolves being tried and executed in the infamous Witch Mania times but among them is a chilling number of stories coming from Livonia, which is now called Estonia. One case in particular is very sad.
Hans was only 18 years old. He came from the small village of Idavere and he was badly bitten by a dog. Then he was arrested and taken to court, so that he would stand trail for being a werewolf. Hans admitted that he transformed into a wolf, and that he hunted animals in the woods for food. It's never been made clear how many animals he hunted but he had been doing this for two years. He hunted for food and it was only while he was in the form of a wolf. The year was 1651 and the court officials concluded that he was guilty and sentenced him to to death.
Hans didn't deny anything but was convinced that he turned into a wolf. He said that he was bitten by a strange dog or a man in black. The judges concluded that he encountered the Devil. Many came forward as witnesses and blamed him for their livestock mutilations. Besides, unlike other werewolf cases, Hans didn't kill humans, as there is no confession or record of him doing this. It seemed as if the paranoid courts won because those in charge didn't like the idea of peasants killing animals, mainly their game. This jealousy might've contributed to many people accused of being werewolves and witches.
