October ghosts

October is a very special time for celebrating ghosts and other spooky things, when the veil is lifted. This month is filled with stories and true encounters of the paranormal, I've selected a few to mention here. Enjoy reading!

A 15th century castle is a place of regular haunts every Halloween. Located in Aberdeenshire the castle is now a hotel called MacDonald Pittodrie House. Ghostly screaming and crying has been heard on the staircase every Halloween. It's believed to be from a maid who perished during a fire that happened there. There's been reports of unknown smells of smoke and burning, strange running footsteps and sightings of a girl with flaming red hair who falls down the stairs. The library is haunted by regular spirits, and a phantom coach with spectral horses appears outside.

There is a mysterious Halloween legend of a stone that floats in the air every Halloween night. The site is known as Deil's Cradle, found at a glen in Dollar, Clackmannanshire, which is believed the Devil sits on the stone surrounded by witches. The stone levitates until sunrise the following morning.

The woods of Tuamgraney of County Clare is full of eerie creatures, especially during Halloween. The place becomes sinister with multiple entities, including demon hounds such as Black Shuck, a spectral cat and a vicious ram with red eyes beating regular deer. Local people avoid going into the woods during Halloween as they're afraid of the Beasts of Tuamgraney Woods.

At a crossroads in Great Maplestead in Essex, is the location of a witch's grave. Her name was Polly Mills and she died at a castle lake. They buried her at the crossroads of the village. Every Halloween,  fresh flowers appear at her grave.

In Whitby, North Yorkshire, a magical event is believed to happen. Part of legendary folklore, if you stand near the rock of Black Nab during Halloween,  call out the name of your true love. The wind itself will respond and echo the name of your true love, and the sound of bells coming from underwater, where a ship carrying bells from an abbey sank.

In North Shields, a werewolf sighting in an area now called Smith's Dockyards. There is a man who appears in the form of a large black canine who patrols the area during Halloween at night. Who was he? It's a tragic story of a sailor who became lost at sea, then found his way home after many years passed, but his parents didn't recognise him and murdered him. The ghost of the sailor returns there in the form of a wolf/dog.
