Claudette Souchon

Way back in 1978 France, a young woman named Claudette Souchon disappeared, and then reappeared. She was a keen horse rider and she decided to go out to explore the countryside of Camargue near her family's farm. She had two horses and a dog with her on the journey. It should've been a short trip, however, she didn't return home that evening.
A search party found one of Claudette's two horses. It was dead and its body had been mutilated as if it had been "ripped open" as described by witnesses.
Another day passed and Claudette's second horse was found alive but appeared to be so scared that it couldn't walk properly.
The police discovered some of Claudette's clothes in a burned glade, which was about 100 miles from the point when she had started the trip.
Two days passed and a woman phoned the police station to report seeing a "strange girl", not far from the town called Rodez. Soon it was discovered that this strange girl was the missing Claudette. She was found 272 miles away from her original vantage point.
When she was found, Claudette was sitting on the ground, covered in mud. Close by was her dog that was frail and immobile. Claudette herself didn't move or speak. She looked as though she were a "zombie". Thinking she might've been assaulted and worse, Claudette was taken to hospital and examined. There was no signs of assault or rape, and she had to stay in hospital.
Since that strange time, Claudette Souchon hasn't spoken at all. Police couldn't explain what happened to her. The dead horse wasn't killed by animals but they don't know exactly what could've happened. They don't know what could've happened regarding the burned glade.
There are many theories but this one is strange and reeks darkness. Some people believe that she was traumatised after a nasty experience with a gang or a cult, or that she was hit by lightning, or that her horse stepped on a WW2 landmine.
One thing is for certain, I can't find any information about this case. What little info there is leads back to David Weatherly, who writes books about cryptids and the supernatural. So is this story a fabrication? I don't know.

(The picture above is from the web and has nothing to do with the mystery of Claudette Souchon case).
