The Black Forest in Germany: An ideal setting for many fairy tales, with some scary horrors. Folklore tales of headless horsemen, werewolves, giants, mysterious dwarves and forest kings. There is a legend of a certain forest king who steals women and takes him to his secret abode. It has interesting wildlife including giant earthworms, cattle, enigmatic horses and rare (endangered) Western capercaillie birds. This is the location where the Brothers Grimm set their beloved stories of Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Goose Girl.
Wychwood Forest in England: The most haunted forest in England is full of dark tales of paranormal entities. There are stories of phantom coaches pulled by ghostly horses, witches, grey ladies, a haunted bridge, hobgoblins, legendary highwaymen and woodland spirits. It's a favourite place in folk tradition to gather mistletoe, considered sacred by the ancients. Another favourite custom is Feast of Beltane, beer and beverage making.
Hoia-Baciu Woods in Transylvania: Found in Romania, this broad forest overlaps Transylvania and is rich with horror stories. A dark eerie place that inspired Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, this forest is also full of legends. It's regarded as one of the most haunted places on Earth. Not only is it well known for ghosts and monsters, countless many have disappeared and never seen again. It's nicknamed a "Transylvanian Bermuda Triangle!". It's believed that people have entered it and gone through a portal in time. Some have gone into the forest and come out again covered in mysterious burns and illnesses. An area of the forest is a complete circle shape and its barren although it's dense with paranormal activity.
Aokigahara in Japan: Located in Fujinomiya-shi is a thick dark forest near the volcano Mount Fuji. It's got a sinister reputation as a haunted forest as it's full of ghosts and eerie entities, plus darker mysteries that offer no explanation. It's nicknamed "Suicide Forest" because many people have gone there to take their own lives, and never returned. This has been going on for almost a century. It's believed that a number of trapped souls in the forest are causing the atmosphere to be heavy in energy and ghostly phenomena. Travellers in the forest have found compasses not working properly, which might be because of volcanic activity.
Isla de las Munecas in Mexico: This place is an island in the canals of Xochimico which is wooded and also a place full of spooky dolls! There is legend that a girl mysteriously lost her life there, and many paid respects by giving her spirit dolls. Now it's an island completely full of dolls, that look creepy and also off putting so anyone wanting to go and visit will change their minds. It's said that the spirit of the dead girl enters the dolls, or that other children's spirits possesses them. People have claimed the dolls move on their own and even their eyes open. It's been found that people have heard the dolls whispering and trying to lure them to the island. The caretaker of the island took his own life in 2001 as it was believed he suffered from depression, and now his spirit cares for the island still, looking after the spirits of the children.
Elfin Forest in California: A place with many supernatural creatures and ghosts. It's got a reputation locally as being a place where a woman mysteriously died there, and her spirit has been wandering around searching for her family, who also vanished in the forest years before. Archaeologists found tools, burial mounds, relics and petroglyphs belonging to a tribe of Northern Diegueno in the forest. So it's believed the spirits of these earlier people haunt the location. Including this are tales of the elves, ladies in white, bleeding trees, witches, shadows and gypsy curses. A haunted house named Questhaven was the site of an asylum, where a giant white owl and armies of ghosts haunt. Outside is said to be violent man-eating paranormal creatures roaming around outside.
Dow Hill Forest in India: This is found in the West Bengal town of Kurseong and has a reputation for being haunted. There's a boy's school located there, full of spooky hauntings such as eerie noises and footsteps heard within the corridors and rooms even late at night and during holidays when the school has closed. But the surrounding, nearby forest is even more haunted. There's a path named "Death Road" where a phantom of a headless boy haunts through the trees and near the school. There's also reports of a ghostly grey lady and people being watched by gleaming red eyes in the dark forest. Its a gruesome location of grisly murders and hundreds of strange unknown deaths.
