Hello,
This is Violet Dark and one of the blog's contributors.
It's well known that colds and germs spread in winter. They can also pass around when everyone is in a crowded close setting such as a classroom or office. One of our dearest friends, owner of She Wolf Night, has become extremely unwell in the last few days, but her illness was gradual. Other conditions were a factor and now she's bedridden and fighting this horrible flu.
The last I heard, wolves get sick too. Alaskan wolves, for example, have suffered with the coronavirus during winter months. The type infecting wolves is CCoV or Canine Coronavirus. This can infect wolves, dogs, foxes and other canids. Wolves in captivity (it's a term meaning wolves being cared for by humans) are able to get treatment and less likely to become worse. Sadly wolves and other wild canines (including stray dogs) have died from CCoV.
The only way to help these animals (including your beloved pet dogs) if they have CCoV is to give them antibiotics. There isn't any cure or treatment for it. If your dog has CCoV, then give as much care and love. Make sure there's plenty of fresh water for hydration, then give them a bland diet of boiled chicken. Get it some probiotics. Also important is to isolate your dog from other dogs for at least two weeks as this ensures virus doesn't spread. Even more helpful is give your dog a very cosy comfortable space to rest and feel warm.
If your dog loses their appetite then this is when you take it to the vet. Look out for internal bleeding, blood in stools, blood in vomit and in diarrhea. This is a concern. Make sure you safely clean the small space with disinfectant. Make sure dog has very clean bowls and also wash your hands regularly.
Did you know there is a vaccine for CCoV? The vet will give these to your dogs to prevent any further infection or spreading. I want to point out that CCoV can't be passed to humans. It's not even the same as COVID-19 in humans Vice versa a human with COVID-19 can't spread this to dogs.
Now She Wolf Night blog owner is getting a lot of medicines and care. While January is a long cold month, it's been harder for She Wolf Night. She's a Springtime born pup raised in the subtropical climes of the south. We know that winter has never been her favourite season.
From all of us wolf pack ladies here I speak on behalf of them all (myself Violet Dark included, also Storm Valkyrie, Shadow Girl, Charlotte Woods and Luna, owner of Blood Strawberry). We send healing, prayers and blessings to She Wolf Night and her family. Please get better soon!
Violet Dark
