January ghosts

January begins with New Year celebrations, then becomes a long months of dreary quiet, full of cold, darkness and snow. It's any wonder that it's filled with ghost stories. Howling winds, blizzards, icy rain, frost, heavy snow, bare trees and grey skies. It's a perfect backdrop for anything scary and haunting. I shall include some ghosts in January.

On New Year's Day, a phantom golden coach pulled by headless horses appears every year, at The Hatches in Manningford Bruce. There's a pub called The Phantom Coach, named after the haunting, which is believed to have been where a coach disappeared in wetlands, killing several people including horses. Before the area became built up, it was a swamp. Centuries ago, a speeding coach toppled over as it passed a sudden sharp bend in the road. The passengers, driver and footmen died. Their screams can still be heard, and now the ghostly coach appears there every year.

Also on New Year's Eve to New Year's Day, a magical rock goes for a walk! It's in South Glamorgan, and this rock, also called Arthur's Stone, is believed to walk down to the sea for a drink. The Gower legend comes from stories that King Arthur found the stone in his boot and flung it away, which is where it stands now. This old story suggests that King Arthur was a giant. The stone itself, also called Maen Ceti, is a Neolithic burial chamber.

The ghost of Lady Jane Grey happens each year in Newton Linford, on the bridge near the ruins of a castle that was named Bradgate House. It's believed she sits in a coach pulled by headless horses, that passes along the bridge and looks out of the window. The ruins was where she grew up, so this seems the reason for her return. It happens on the 23th January, and it's not known why this date. Legend has it there's activity on New Year's Eve. And then her ghost appears wandering around the chapel.

A headless horseman travels along a road in Stourton, Wiltshire. It's believed that he's the ghost of a man who broke his neck after being flung from his horse. He was originally trying to get to Wincanton Market from Stourton quickly and it stressed his horse. Now sometimes his ghost often appears on the 31st January with a black dog.

During the first new moon of the year, a ghost monk appears in Guisborough, North Yorkshire. He's also referred to as the "Black Monk" and he always appeared in the ruins of Guisborough Priory, and also linked with travelling around to what is Monks Walk. a lime tree avenue associated with monks using hidden passages. Some say a box of buried treasure guarded by a raven is somewhere hidden there.

Island of dolls

La Isla de las Munecas is one of the creepiest places that will give some nightmares. It's better known as the Island of Dolls, located in Xochimilco in Mexico City. Those with a fear of dolls would try and avoid it. While this island seems to be small and there are dolls as the only inhabitants, it's got a dark history.

A caretaker living on the island made a grim discovery. He found the body of a drowned girl and her spirit haunted him while he was coming to terms with the tragedy. This was during the 1950's, long before the internet, and he started placing dolls here and there to help the spirit feel better. Soon this became a hobby, and he collected many more dolls to hang up for the ghost girl.

One of the dolls was believed to belong to the drowned girl, which was found floating on the water of the canal. The caretaker soon grew more obsessed with locating dolls, from new to old, pristine and pretty to broken and filthy. He found dolls anywhere, sometimes in the canal, on walks, discarded dolls and even dolls left in gardens he accessed. He hung the dolls up to help the ghost girl, but soon he was helping more spirits of children become appeased.

The man died in 2001, elderly and with a legacy. His island became legend. The strange thing was that he drowned in the exact same place that he found the deceased girl decades before.

Today the island is a popular tourist attraction and keen paranormal research location. It's believed the spirit of the drowned girl plays with the dolls. Also it's believed the dolls whisper at night and move on their own. It could be the wind or the ghosts of the drowned girl and the caretaker. The dolls can be found hanging from all around the island.

Spooky quicks January 2026

 Everyone, Happy New Year!

Let's start off 2026 talking about some short brief weird news and then personal stories. It's rumoured that real aliens appear in a brand new film by Steven Spielberg. It's called "Disclosure Day" and will be released in the summer 2026. Some believe it's not just for entertainment but to inform the public about UFO secrecy. Others pointed out the director wasn't going to make another UFO film unless it was something special.

The January Wolf Moon will be the first of 13 moons this year. It's going to be a supermoon, and will appear on the 3rd January. It will also happen during a rare alignment of Earth, sun and moon in January. So the moon will be closest to Earth and we're closest to the sun. Despite the closeness of Earth, Sun and Moon, it's believed this might cause tidal havoc along coastlines and beaches. The last time such an event happened was in 1912, and people blamed the sinking of the Titanic on this event because of the pull of the sea shifting along icebergs. However, scientists don't think this was it but that will always be a mystery.

The mysterious structure found beneath the Giza pyramids was confirmed when other satellites located it using radar. The technique is synthetic aperture radar Doppler tomography. The engineer who made it believes that the unknown city under Giza pyramids are just the "tip of the iceberg".

Occult arts using magical mirrors and scrying, could have a logical explanation, as scientists are theorising. They have suggested they've proven "time reflections" exist. It means electromagnetic waves are altered in different directions, as they made tests on light reflections at the CUNY centre in New York. The research was intended to create new technology for wireless and computers.

Creepy news now, a man filmed a ghost in a car. In a Mendoza hospital carpark, an employee filmed someone playing around inside one of the parked cars, but the person disappeared mysteriously when he approached. This is very interesting. Watch the clip HERE on Instagram and decide for yourself if it's real or not.

Personal experiences from people who revealed their strange sightings. A Reddit user named Jack_N_the_Box posted that on the walk home at 3am, he saw a very tall person wearing bright white clothes. The figure was about nine feet tall and walking across the lawns of houses. The unnerved witness described a sense of being watched. Another person named immortaldev saw a similar entity while driving along a frontage road at night, and then noticed a very tall amorphous white figure just standing on the side of the road.

There will be more stories found at Graveyard Shift on Ranker.
