Aderyn y Corff

In Celtic folklore there is a nocturnal creature named Aderyn y Corff. It resembles an owl, and its name means "corpse bird" because it's believed to be an omen of death. When the Aderyn y Corff screeches outside the house, it means that someone is going to die. While looking like an owl, it's not really an owl, because it doesn't have feathers but it could also just blend in with the darkness.

Sometimes this is connected to Screech Owl legends around Wales, Scotland and Ireland. These harbingers of death look like owls and appear at the bedside of the dying, screeching. Also they appear with accompanying corpse lights or ghosts. The Aderyn y Corff is a bird of the Underworld. whose screeches mean death or misfortune. Often these corpse birds are female, similar to the birds of Tylwyth Teg and Gwyn ab Nudd. The owl is believed to be the manifestation of Blodeuwedd, a beautiful flower maiden who transformed into an owl.

The other night after a very hot day, we decided to leave the door open to let out cooking spicy steam that made people cough. It was that night when the garden was so dark with fresh air, that I left it open as I ran errands. As I passed the open back door, there was the unmistakable screech of an owl. There was this beautiful shadow owl , perched right outside looking into my house! It flew off screeching to the nearby trees. A surprise visitor and an interesting encounter though, which was a good topic of conversation.

The Wampus Cat

In the Americas are many wild cats and also just as many, or even more, unknown cats including legendary creatures. Among the many unexplained sightings of cryptids and mythical beasts, there is s terrible feline called the Wampus Cat.

First mentioned in newspapers at the beginning of the 20th century, appearing at night when it was Summer and often moonlit. Described as looking similar to a bobcat except much bigger.

The Wampus Cat began showing up on borderlands of Oklahoma, then in Mississippi and later Arkansas. It was a vicious predator that killed livestock and over 100 dogs. People were terrified and lived in fear of it as the Wampus Cat lurked in shadows.

Then it was caught, and much was said. Described as having glowing eyes and a nine foot long tail, looking like a huge cat with short legs. The front paws were similar to that of a bear's with extended claws. However the back paws had severe calluses and it looked like cloven hooves.

More described the Wampus Cat with black fur with white spots. Or it might've been black with white speckles. The beast was kept for a couple of days but it escaped. Since then there's been a number of sightings of a strange large feline believed to be the Wampus Cat.

Ghost girl of Eyeworth Pond

There is a picturesque village in Hampshire, England called Fritham that borders on Wiltshire. It's the location of a beautiful lake that was created in the early 19th century when there used to be a small factory operating there, that made smokeless gunpowder. It sounds nice but it's actually haunted. There is a wooden bridge still there today but in 1987 a ghost was photographed right there.

A local hunt was going on and photographs were being taken. In one of the photos, featuring hunters on horseback with their hounds crossing the bridge, is an eerie pale figure of a girl stood nearby. Those present couldn't remember seeing her at the time. The owner of the picture sent it to experts and soon the media picked up on it. The picture of the ghost girl became famous.

Cropped photo of the mysterious girl

In the picture there is clearly a pale apparition of a girl wearing old fashioned clothes. There were no special add on features, double exposure or photoshopping, since this was back in 1987 Some people think the spirit is holding a "camera" but to me that looks as if she's carrying a doll. Judging by her small frame in comparison to the hunters, she's probably a child or a very petite woman.

In an earlier photograph taken moments before, it shows the hunters approaching the bridge while the ghost girl isn't there. However, the dogs are in the place where the girl would later stand. Perhaps the spirit is a daughter of someone who used to work in the Victorian factory, or who had drowned in the pond. It's certainly possible that the girl might even be a spirit of a girl who lived further back in time. I hope this young spirit has found peace.

Flower moon

This month of May the full moon will occur on the 12th and is called the "flower moon". Other names associated with May full moon are Mother Mmoon, Milk Moon, Bright Moon, Planting Moon, Leaf Budding Moon, Grass Moon, Hare Moon and Corn planting Moon. The most well known name for May's full moon is Flower Moon. Associated with the appearance and abundance of flowers in full bloom, colours, aromas and also the return of plants. Leaves become fuller, making woodlands denser and lush, while the grass is brighter in colour and grow quickly to produce seeds and oxygen.

May is also the season of pollen. This is a powdery natural stuff that comes from trees, flowers and grass. Pollen is airborne and floats around invisible at times but it can cause allergies. This includes symptoms of sneezing, hay fever and watery eyes. Weather warnings put out pollen alerts so that people can take precautions.

This year's flower moon will also be a "micromoon" or "mini moon". A micromoon is when the full moon is furthest away from Earth. Look at this page on Time and Date website to read more about micromoons.

In legends and folklore, the Flower Moon is a good time for werewolves. The Flower Moon of May is linked to new life, plant growth and with days getting increasingly warmer, it's when many animals come out of their dens and hiding places to enjoy the season. This is ripe for hunting, and werewolves become more eager to look for prey! Be safe!

Beast of Gevaudan

Today an area of France called Lozère Department part of the modern Occitannia region was most full of horrors centuries ago. Back then it was the Gevaudan region. And Gevaudan was infamous for a monstrous series of animal attacks on humans by the Beast of Gevaudan. Villages of the Margeride Mountains were a hunting ground for the dangerous predator. This took place between the years 1764 and 1767, where hundreds of people were attacked. Some survived with injuries while many were unfortunate. Roughly it has always been believed that 600 people were killed but a 1980's study estimated about 113 deaths.

One of the first victims was a young peasant girl named Marie Jeanne Valet who was worried about her agitated herd of cattle. Coming from the woods she noticed a large animal that resembled a big wolf. It jumped on her until bulls charged at the beast and sent it away. She was rescued by her own cattle, although the beast went onto kill another victim soon after. A shepherdess named Jeanne Boulet was out in the field tending to her flock when she encountered the terrible beast. What was left of her was horrific. From then on, a string of attacks happened by the same creature, and the victims were mostly  women and children. It attacked men on their own and seeming vulnerable.

Among the tragic victims of the beast, were many survivors, A number of heroes took on the ferocious man-eater and these included hunters as well as children, such as led by 10 year old Jacques Portefaix. He used wit and determination to defend his friends and family, then rewarded by King Louis XV for his bravery. There is another girl named Jeanne-Marie Valet who managed to fight off the beast using a large stick and now today there is a statue of her fighting the Beast. Have a look at it here on Atlas Obscura

The survivors could remember it "like a wolf but not a wolf." The Beast was described as grey-red colour with a black stripe along its spine. It had a long tail with dark tuft at its end. Some say it was a lion instead of a wolf, but the face was wolflike with long nose. Others theorise it was a striped hyena but those are smaller and rarely attack people with such ferocity as this. Others theorised it could be supernatural like a dogman or a werewolf.

After the Beast was hunted and killed the horrors didn't just finish. More attacks continued by similar Beasts, thought to be offspring of the original Beast. Eventually these were all killed by hunters and the nightmare ended. So now this has become part of legend in France.

My own conclusion: The Beast of Gevaudan was a Canis Lupus Maximus. This is a subspecies of wolf much larger than the common grey wolf. Fossils of it were found in Jaurens cave in Southern France (close to Gevaudan).

Spooky quicks May 2025

The devastating earthquake in Myanmar that killed over 3,000 people has it's own mysteries. So many beautiful important religious and historic buildings were reduced to rubble. A 21 year old TikTok astrologer predicted the earthquake before it happened, causing a lot of distress. John Moa The was arrested in Monywa for spreading "fake news" on social media. In the past he made other predictions including bad weather, a release of a civilian leader and American airstrikes on Myanmar. Predicting earthquakes using technology is a thing of science fiction?

Also regarding the same subject, the 2025 earthquake of Myanmar has exposed some very interesting ancient relics. The 7.7 magnitude earthquake that shook Myanmar uncovered ancient structures, believed to be a "water palace" from the Konbaung Dynasty. This site was found in Tada-U Township in Myanmar.

Some weird colourful orbs of light was filmed in the clouds above Vancouver. Kind of like disco lights that were flashing colourful displays and shining the clouds. You can watch the clip here on X.

While we're in the new month of May, looking back on April has led me to talk about a couple of strange Easter traditions. In Norway people become obsessed with crime stories around Easter time, which is called Påskekrim or "Easter crime". This is not actually as creepy as the Easter whip, which is a tradition in Slavic countries where men use braided branches of willow to whip young women for good health. Here we've scoffed tons of chocolate eggs. Now we're in the season of Maypole dancing and Jack in the Green or Green Man.

In Russia, there was a very remarkable real life Wonder Woman. An 80 year old woman who fell from a 6th floor window, who then just walked away unhurt. It's believed that her fall was cushioned by the soft bonnet of a parked car that broke on impact! For photos and article visit Oddity Central HERE.
